PIGEONS AND DOVES |
Family Columbidae
These are readily recognised medium-sized seed or fruit-eating birds. Of the 27 species in Australia, only three are commonly seen in Canberra gardens. Two other species, Spotted Turtle-dove (11 records) and Barbary Dove (1), both introduced, were recorded in the survey. There is no known feral population in Canberra although the Spotted Turtle-dove is locally common and expanding on the eastern and southen seaboards. Two other species of small, ground-feeding native pigeons were recorded in the survey. These were the Diamond Dove (2) and Peaceful Dove (7). Both are common aviary birds but some records could be of wild birds.
