The Red-browed Finch is the most common native finch seen in and around Canberra. They prefer wetter, thicker and greener habitat than other finches and likes to have some dense cover. They will sometimes feed on lawns, provided the grass is seeding, and will also feed in the canopy of seeding Casuarinas, which is unusual for a finch.

There are more sightings in winter than in summer, probably because the birds move into more forested areas for breeding. Numbers have fluctuated widely during the survey but a slow overall increase in numbers is discernible. R=50. BR=55.
