The Yellow Thornbill is rare in suburban areas. It feeds in dense stands of wattles and other shrubs bordering open country and river edges and is the least conspicuous of the local thornbills. It is often only distinguished by its call and can be overlooked or mistaken for Weebills or Striated Thornbills. It typically appears only on the charts of more experienced observers and mostly at sites bordering or close to Canberra Nature Park.
