These well-camouflaged birds may be more common than the recorded numbers suggest. Like the Southern Boobook they are sedentary birds, living in pairs, occupying quite large territories.

Frogmouths were not recorded in every year of the survey and most records are from a few sites adjacent to Canberra nature parks. The annual pattern is of higher numbers from November to March. This is because the birds are more obvious during breeding, when family groups of up to five birds contribute significantly to the count.
