These highly mobile birds with long, down-curved bills and featherless heads, do not often come into gardens but do appear, sometimes in large mixed flocks,on Canberra playing fields. They are also seen flying high in large flocks over the region. Australian White Ibis are also known scavengers at refuse tips.

The Australian White Ibis shows a peak in numbers in December and January. Numbers were especially high in 1998 at sites in Holt and Melba. The Straw-necked Ibis, however, builds up from March to a peak in April and May with very low numbers from July to February. Greatest numbers recorded were in 1995. Both the White ibis and the Straw-necked Ibis were recorded mostly in large groups, 16 in a group for the Australian White Ibis and 21 for the Straw-necked Ibis.
