Brown Goshawk: Photo: Graeme Chapman

These are fairly secretive birds, though noisy when breeding, and the male can be difficult to distinguish from the female Collared Sparrowhawk. Their habitat is woodland and they move readily through the suburbs from areas such as Canberra Nature Park and Murrumbidgee River corridor.

Numbers have fluctuated over the survey with no apparent trend upwards or downwars. There are more sightings during late summer and autumn. This is when young are about to fledge and the parents have peak demands on them. As well, recently fledged young would be moving into the suburbs. R=56. BR=72.
