The Rufous Fantail inhabits the lower levels of dense vegetation in and around damp forest gullies, and is more shy and less conspicuous than the Grey Fantail. It is both a north-south and altitudinal migrant. It is a very attractive bird and its occurrence in a garden is a real highlight. They come to the region for the summer, but generally occur in the suburbs only briefly in transit on their way to and from the higher forested ranges. This leads to a pronounced annual pattern with very conspicuous peaks in November and March. Numbers have fluctuated over the duration of the survey but no trend is apparent. R=84. BR=NA.
