Satin Flycatchers are much less common in Canberra than Leaden Flycatchers, preferring the denser forest habitats of the ranges. They are similar in both appearance and call to the Leaden Flycatcher and may be confused with them. Almost absent from May to August, their numbers increase in October when arriving birds are quite active and vocal. Numbers then quickly decline as they move well away from the city into the ranges to breed. Unlike the Leaden Flycatcher, there is only a very small rise in numbers peak in February and March. Most birds have migrated north for the winter by the end of April. Numbers have been lower in the last ten years of the survey, but nay be slightly on the rise again. The only breeding record is of a dependent young in late January 1986. R=97. BR=85.
